A Joint European Programme

1° Common admission criteria

The selection of EMIN students will be based on the excellence of their studies.

Mandatory requirements

Previous studies

The criteria for previous studies include:
Candidates must have obtained a BSc diploma (or equivalent) of substantial quality and level corresponding to at least 3 years studies at University, equivalent to 180 ECTS.

Candidates must hold a degree in Engineering, Economics or Management (to study at TUDelft and KULeuven, these studies must be in a technological field or the natural sciences).

English proficiency

Students must take courses in English (Delft, Comillas and Paris XI), and possible courses are also offered in French (Paris XI), Spanish (Comillas) and Dutch (KULeuven and TUDelft). A high level of English is therefore required.

Students whose mother tongue is not English and who did not take all their secondary or tertiary education in English, must provide proof of their command of English, for instance the English Proficiency Certificate, International TOEFL score 80 (Internet-based test), IELTS (academic version) overall band score of at least 6.5, or a DIALANG European Test level B2.

Knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Dutch is not mandatory, but will be taken into account. If they are not the mother language of the student, understanding may be acknowledged in two ways: submitting official proof of language skill: Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française, Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera; or by passing the DIALANG European test.

Selection criteria

The Committee will classify candidates pursuant to the following criteria:
 Academic record (35%)
 English proficiency (20%)
 Other languages (15%)
 Curriculum vitae (15%)
Letters of motivation and recommendation forms (15%)

For the academic record, the candidates should have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) for the BSc study of at least 75% of the scale maximum.

For students whose previous instruction language is not English, if available, a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test score of at least 450 in verbal reasoning, 4.1 in analytical writing skills, and 650 in quantitative reasoning.

In individual cases, a selection committee will decide whether there are exceptional circumstances that justify deviation from one or more of the selection criteria. Exceptional circumstances may result in conditional admission in which case final admission and enrolment will take place only after the condition(s) have been fulfilled.

Selection procedure

COMILLAS, as consortium coordinator, receives and classifies the applications, and then submits them to the consideration of the EMIN Joint Admissions Committee. An online intranet has been developed to facilitate the sharing and analysis of the candidates’ applications by the members of the Committee.

All degree awarding partners will be represented on this committee. Candidate evaluation in accordance with the selection criteria are governed by the General Principles of the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, i.e., transparency, merits, non-discrimination, recognition of mobility experience, recognition of qualifications, and the pattern of lifelong professional development.

In the initial screening, a video-conference conversation with candidates may exceptionally be required to verify their motivations and the consistency of their project. The Joint Admissions Committee will draw up a final list of students admitted after this interview.

After the selection, the EMIN Consortium will submit the lists of main candidates for awarding the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, according to the calls established each year for Category A and Category B candidates.

Gender balance

Since its foundation the EMIN consortium has established the principle of non discrimination, whether for gender, for cultural, religious or political beliefs. The criteria applied for selection search for students’ excellence and their appropriateness for the EMIN studies. Thus, applicants are evaluated on the basis of only their personal merits as mentioned above.

Geographical distribution

Students for the EMIN Programme come from a wide range of countries. Students applying for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship must therefore comply with the restrictions of the programme regarding geographical balance (maximum number of scholarships per country and per institution of origin) to be defined each call by the EACEA.
